Online adventure games typically refer to those games found on the internet where the player takes on the role of and adventurer in an interactive story. The player is the hero who goes about exploring situations through problem solving and completing puzzles along with a variety of other interesting challenges. Many people are taking to online adventure games and discovering a new world of fun and mind stimulating development.

Adventure games generally comes in the form of a narrative where the primary player is consistently placed in dangerous situations requiring the use of wits and skill. The adventure frequently draws heavily from other narrative based media including films and books. Online adventure games include mystery, fantasy, science fiction, horror and even humour. Traditional adventure games primarily have situational problems for the player to solve, with very little or no action. If there is action, it is generally confined to isolated minigames. The majority of adventure games were set up for single players because it is heavily dependent on narrative and character rather than active interaction. The development of character and narrative being more important than the development of the game play.

Online adventure games which combine action is more common today. Pure action games have gameplay depending very much on the players reflexes to deal with the variety of situations that arise. Action-adventure games engage both the reflexes of the player and problem solving skills. Action-adventures are hybrid games requiring many of the same skills as action games, but also offer a narrative, a number of characters and other features of adventure games. Online adventure games incorporating action include the Legend of Zelda and Tomb Raider.

The Japanese game the Legend of Zelda takes in both action and adventure but it also includes role playing and puzzles. The hero Link enters into a cave commencing an adventure guided by townspeople, merchants and fairies providing cryptic clues. Link begins with a shield but soon gains the use of a sword. He has to battle to find the entrances to nine underground dungeons. The dungeons are a maze like collection of room with secret passages guarded by monsters.

Tomb Raider is an action adventure game in combining the two elements of action and adventure into the same game. The heroine has situations where she has to kill a variety of dangerous animals and other creatures while collecting objects and solving puzzles while gaining access to powerful artefacts. Although Lara is faced with a human opponent the emphasis is based on solving puzzles and performing trick jumps to complete each level.

Many in the games community and in the media disagree about the nature of of adventure and action games. There is some debate as to what constitutes an This leads to discussion as to what constitutes an adventure game and what constitutes an action game and where the border between the two exists. There are those who define an action adventure game as having enough action in it not to be called an adventure game, but not enough action to be called an action game. Regardless of whether or not online adventure games are purely adventure or hybrid online adventure games incorporating action these games make for a lot of fun online.
